Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown.G2532G1831G1564G2532G2064G1519G846G3968G2532G846G3101G190G846 2The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, "Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?"G2532G4521G1096G756G1321G1722G4864G2532G4183G191G1605G3004G4159G5129G5023G2532G5101G4678G1325G846G3754G2532G5108G1411G1096G1223G846G5495 3Then they scoffed, "He's just a carpenter, the son of Maryc and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us." They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.G2076G3756G3778G5045G5207G3137G1161G80G2385G2532G2500G2532G2455G2532G4613G2532G1526G3756G846G79G5602G4314G2248G2532G4624G1722G846 4Then Jesus told them, "A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family."G1161G2424G3004G846G3754G4396G2076G3756G820G1508G1722G846G3968G2532G1722G4773G2532G1722G846G3614 5And because of their unbelief, he couldn't do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them.G2532G3756G1410G1563G4160G3762G1411G1508G2007G5495G3641G732G2323

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples

6And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.G2532G2296G1223G846G570G2532G4013G2945G2968G1321 7And he called his twelve disciples together and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evilc spirits.G2532G4341G1427G2532G756G649G846G649G1417G1417G2532G1325G846G1849G169G4151 8He told them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick—no food, no traveler's bag, no moneyc.G2532G3853G846G2443G142G3367G1519G3598G1508G4464G3440G3361G4082G3361G740G3361G5475G1519G2223 9He allowed them to wear sandals but not to take a change of clothes.G235G5265G4547G2532G3361G1746G1746G1417G5509 10"Wherever you go," he said, "stay in the same house until you leave town.G2532G3004G846G3699G1437G1525G1519G3614G1563G3306G2193G302G1831G1564 11But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate."G2532G3745G302G1209G3361G1209G5209G3366G191G5216G1607G1564G1621G5522G5270G5216G4228G1519G3142G846G281G3004G5213G2071G414G4670G2228G1116G1722G2250G2920G2228G1565G4172 12So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God.G2532G1831G2784G2443G3340 13And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.G2532G1544G4183G1140G2532G218G1637G4183G732G2532G2323

The Death of John the Baptist

14Herod Antipas, the king, soon heard about Jesus, because everyone was talking about him. Some were sayingc, "This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead. That is why he can do such miracles."G2532G935G2264G191G1063G846G3686G1096G5318G2532G3004G3754G2491G907G1453G1537G3498G2532G1223G5124G1411G1754G1722G846 15Others said, "He's the prophet Elijah." Still others said, "He's a prophet like the other great prophets of the past."G243G3004G3754G2076G2243G1161G243G3004G3754G2076G4396G2228G5613G1520G4396 16When Herod heard about Jesus, he said, "John, the man I beheaded, has come back from the dead."G1161G2264G191G2036G3778G2076G2491G3754G3739G1473G607G846G1453G1537G3498 17For Herod had sent soldiers to arrest and imprison John as a favor to Herodias. She had been his brother Philip's wife, but Herod had married her.G1063G2264G846G649G2902G2491G2532G1210G846G1722G5438G1223G2266G1223G846G80G5376G1135G3754G1060G846 18John had been telling Herod, "It is against God's law for you to marry your brother's wife."G1063G2491G3004G2264G3754G1832G3756G1832G4671G2192G4675G80G1135 19So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But without Herod's approval she was powerless,G1161G2266G1758G846G2532G2309G615G846G2532G1410G3756 20for Herod respected John; and knowing that he was a good and holy man, he protected him. Herod was greatly disturbed whenever he talked with John, but even so, he liked to listen to him.G1063G2264G5399G2491G1492G846G1342G435G2532G40G2532G4933G846G2532G191G846G4160G4183G2532G191G846G2234 21Herodias's chance finally came on Herod's birthday. He gave a party for his high government officials, army officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee.G2532G2121G2250G1096G3753G2264G846G1077G4160G1173G846G3175G2532G5506G2532G4413G1056 22Then his daughter, also named Herodiasc, came in and performed a dance that greatly pleased Herod and his guests. "Ask me for anything you like," the king said to the girl, "and I will give it to you."G2532G2364G846G2266G1525G2532G3738G2532G700G2264G2532G4873G935G2036G2877G154G3165G3739G1437G2309G2532G1325G4671 23He even vowed, "I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my kingdom!"G2532G3660G846G3754G3739G1437G154G3165G1325G4671G2193G2255G3450G932 24She went out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother told her, "Ask for the head of John the Baptist!"G1161G1831G2036G846G3384G5101G154G1161G2036G2776G2491G910 25So the girl hurried back to the king and told him, "I want the head of John the Baptist, right now, on a tray!"G2532G1525G2112G3326G4710G4314G935G154G3004G2309G2443G1325G3427G1824G1909G4094G2776G2491G910 26Then the king deeply regretted what he had said; but because of the vows he had made in front of his guests, he couldn't refuse her.G2532G935G1096G4036G1223G3727G2532G3588G4873G2309G3756G114G846 27So he immediately sent an executioner to the prison to cut off John's head and bring it to him. The soldier beheaded John in the prison,G2532G2112G935G649G4688G2004G846G2776G5342G1161G565G607G846G1722G5438 28brought his head on a tray, and gave it to the girl, who took it to her mother.G2532G5342G846G2776G1909G4094G2532G1325G846G2877G2532G2877G1325G846G846G3384 29When John's disciples heard what had happened, they came to get his body and buried it in a tomb.G2532G846G3101G191G2064G2532G142G846G4430G2532G5087G846G1722G3419

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

30The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught.G2532G652G4863G4314G2424G2532G518G846G3956G2532G3745G4160G2532G3745G1321 31Then Jesus said, "Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile." He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat.G2532G2036G846G1205G5210G846G2596G2398G1519G2048G5117G2532G373G3641G1063G2258G4183G2064G2532G5217G2532G3761G2119G3761G5315 32So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone.G2532G565G1519G2048G5117G4143G2596G2398 33But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them.G2532G3793G1492G846G5217G2532G4183G1921G846G2532G4936G3979G1563G575G3956G4172G2532G4281G846G2532G4905G4314G846 34Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.G2532G2424G1831G1492G4183G3793G2532G4697G1909G846G3754G2258G5613G4263G3361G2192G4166G2532G756G1321G846G4183 35Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late.G2532G5610G1096G2235G4183G846G3101G4334G846G3004G3754G2076G2048G5117G2532G2235G5610G4183 36Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat."G630G846G630G2443G565G1519G68G2945G2532G2968G59G1438G740G1063G2192G5101G3756G5315 37But Jesus said, "You feed them." "With what?" they asked. "We'd have to work for months to earn enough moneyc to buy food for all these people!"G611G1161G2036G846G1325G5210G846G5315G2532G3004G846G565G59G1250G1220G740G2532G1325G846G5315 38"How much bread do you have?" he asked. "Go and find out." They came back and reported, "We have five loaves of bread and two fish."G1161G3004G846G4214G740G2192G5217G2532G1492G2532G1097G3004G4002G2532G1417G2486 39Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on the green grass.G2532G2004G846G347G3956G347G4849G4849G1909G5515G5528 40So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred.G2532G377G4237G4237G303G1540G2532G303G4004 41Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share.G2532G2983G4002G740G2532G1417G2486G308G1519G3772G2127G2532G2622G740G2532G1325G846G3101G2443G3908G846G2532G1417G2486G3307G3956 42They all ate as much as they wanted,G2532G5315G3956G5315G2532G5526 43and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish.G2532G142G1427G2894G4134G2801G2532G575G2486 44A total of 5,000 men and their families were fed from those loaves!G2532G5315G740G2258G5616G4000G435

Jesus Walks on Water

45Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he sent the people home.G2532G2112G315G846G3101G1684G1519G4143G2532G4254G1519G4008G4254G4314G966G2193G846G630G3793 46After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray.G2532G657G846G657G565G1519G3735G4336 47Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land.G2532G3798G1096G4143G2258G1722G3319G2281G2532G846G3441G1909G1093 48He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o'clock in the morningc Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them,G2532G1492G846G928G1722G1643G1063G417G2258G1727G846G2532G4012G5067G5438G3571G2064G4314G846G4043G1909G2281G2532G2309G3928G846 49but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost.G1161G1492G846G4043G1909G2281G1380G1511G5326G2532G349 50They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don't be afraid," he said. "Take courage! I am here!c"G1063G3956G1492G846G2532G5015G2532G2112G2980G3326G846G2532G3004G846G2293G1510G1473G5399G3361G5399 51Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed,G2532G305G4314G846G1519G4143G2532G417G2869G2532G3029G1839G1722G1438G1537G4053G2532G2296 52for they still didn't understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.G1063G4920G3756G1909G740G1063G846G2588G2258G4456 53After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. They brought the boat to shoreG2532G1276G2064G1909G1093G1082G2532G4358 54and climbed out. The people recognized Jesus at once,G2532G846G1831G1537G4143G2112G1921G846 55and they ran throughout the whole area, carrying sick people on mats to wherever they heard he was.G4063G1565G3650G4066G756G4064G1909G2895G2192G2560G3699G191G3754G1563G2076 56Wherever he went—in villages, cities, or the countryside—they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.G2532G3699G302G1531G1519G2968G2228G4172G2228G68G5087G770G1722G58G2532G3870G846G2443G680G2579G2579G2899G846G2440G2532G3745G302G680G846G4982

Jesus Teaches about Inner Purity

7One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus.G2532G4863G4314G846G5330G2532G5100G1122G2064G575G24142They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.G2532G1492G5100G846G3101G2068G740G2839G5123G449G5495G32013(The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped handsc, as required by their ancient traditions.G1063G5330G2532G3956G2453G3362G3538G5495G4435G2068G3756G2902G3862G42454Similarly, they don't eat anything from the market until they immerse their handsc in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to—such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles.)G2532G575G58G3362G907G2068G3756G2532G4183G243G2076G3739G3880G2902G909G4221G2532G3582G2532G5473G2532G28255So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, "Why don't your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony."G1899G5330G2532G1122G1905G846G1302G4043G3756G4675G3101G2596G3862G4245G235G2068G740G449G54956Jesus replied, "You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.G611G1161G2036G846G3754G2573G2268G4395G4012G5216G5273G5613G1125G3778G2992G5091G3165G5491G1161G846G2588G568G4206G575G17007Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.'cG1161G3155G4576G3165G1321G1319G1778G4448For you ignore God's law and substitute your own tradition."G1063G863G1785G2316G2902G3862G444G909G3582G2532G4221G2532G4183G243G5108G3946G41609Then he said, "You skillfully sidestep God's law in order to hold on to your own tradition.G2532G3004G846G2573G114G1785G2316G2443G5083G5216G386210For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: 'Honor your father and mother,'c and 'Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.'G1063G3475G2036G5091G4675G3962G2532G4675G3384G2532G2551G3962G2228G3384G5053G228811But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, 'Sorry, I can't help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.'cG1161G5210G3004G1437G444G2036G3962G2228G3384G2878G3603G1435G1537G3739G1437G5623G170012In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.G2532G863G846G3765G4160G3762G846G3962G2228G846G338413And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition.
